About Us

The EDI Centre in Longford was established in 1998 by Longford Community Resources Clg and the Longford District Council of Trade and is located in a purpose built building with bright, spacious training rooms in an easy accessible location close to the main shopping areas.

The Centre is affiliated to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions in Ireland and the overall aim of the Centre is to meet the needs of people who are at present unemployed or under-employed.

A central location, trained staff, well established links with statutory agencies and tailor-designed  services mean the EDI Centre is providing a responsive and progressive service to the local community in Longford. The focus of work is on information provision, mediation, pre-employment supports, education and training, enterprise development, delivery of outreach services to rural areas and delivery of a furniture recycling service, the Revamp 3RStore.

Our current staffing levels allow us to provide a range of services to our clients. These services are being expanded, subject to funding, to meet identified needs. It is our experience that a client visiting the Centre to source information on one topic and will learn of other opportunities that are available to them for example, the Jobs Seeking Service or Mediation service.

Our ability to act as a ‘one stop shop’ is important in offering clients a quality service as lack of access to information is one of the key barriers to progression amongst unemployed people. The Centre provides a free and confidential information service to all members of the general public, on issues such as Social Welfare entitlements, employment, health, farm assist, education, housing and statutory rights.

The EDI is managed by a voluntary committee who are responsible for all decisions regarding the management of the Centre. The objectives of the Employment Development Information Centre are:

  • To inform welfare dependent people of their rights
  • To campaign for change
  • To provide practical services which assist welfare dependent people to find employment
  • To provide education and training at introductory, progressive and advanced levels

The Centre employs 40 staff who participate in Intreo’s Community Employment (CE) programme, some of these staff members are based in the EDI Centre itself and others are based in five subgroups located at various locations in County Longford.  For more information click on the Community Employment Programme link above.
