Introduction to Light Engineering

If you are interested in engineering or working as a machine operator in a precision engineering workshop but unsure if an apprenticeship is right for you then this is a good starter course for you.

Successful candiates can move onto our very successful Level 4 Pre-Apprenticeship Engineering Course

A training allowance is available to eligible candidates.

This short 10 week full time course consists of:

Level 3 Engineering Workshop Skills and a choise between Level 4 Milling and Level 4 Turning

Engineering Workshop Skills

On completion learners will be able to follow a drawing or sketch for a specified mechanical engineering task. Carry out specified bench work activities using hand and power tools. Measure and mark out various geometric shapes accurately onto metal. Use hand tools to make riveted and soft soldered joints. Apply appropriate health, safety and personal hygiene procedures when performing mechanical engineering tasks

Milling

On completion learners will be able to operate a milling machine to approved standards. Apply safe work practices while operating a milling machine, interpret simple component drawings, prepare a vertical milling machine to produce production pieces, maintain milling machine, tools and equipment.

Turning

On completion learners will be able to operate a lathe to approved standards. Apply safe work practices while operating a centre lathe, explain how the centre lathe is setup to produce production pieces, cut medium diamond knurls, operate centre lathe to produce production pieces to specifications maintain lathe, tools and equipment.
