This Catering and Lifeskills Course is a Longford/Westmeath Education and Training Board (LWETB) Local Training Initiative (LTI).
Local Training Initiatives are community based training courses, primarily for unemployed individuals aged 35 and under, with no formal qualifications or incomplete secondary level qualification. The overall aim of LTI programmes is to assist unemployed people to move towards employment by providing community-based training and work experience leading to nationally recognised qualifications.
LTIs encourage learners to develop their existing skills and learn new skills in an environment that is tailored to meet their individual needs. This approach allows learners to develop valuable employment-related skills and knowledge.
The EDI Centre’s Catering and Lifeskills Course is a full-time 50 week QQI Level 4 accredited course for people who are unemployed or in receipt of a disability allowance. The following allowances are available to eligible candidates: Childcare / Travel / Accommodation.
Education: No formal education or qualifications are required although applicants may have participated in primary and secondary education. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a standard of knowledge, skill and competence equivalent to NFQ Level 3 when accessing a Level 4 programme.
Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course and be able to work under direction with some ability to work on their own initiative.

My background is firmly in catering, having trained in professional cookery when I finished school and subsequently been conferred with a degree in Culinary Arts. I have worked at home and abroad and have held Head Chef positions throughout my career. Keeping abreast of developments, trends and the requirements of the catering industry is important to me. Delivering a Catering and Lifeskills Programme at the EDI Centre which prepares trainees for the many available opportunities within that sector is now my primary focus.

My career began in hotel management and since joining the EDI Centre in 2015 I hold the position of Assistant Coordinator on the Catering Programme. Along with several years in the hotel industry, in the past I worked in the car rental and courier businesses both in the U.K. and the Middle East which provided me with the skills to deal with all aspects of Customer Service. Having qualified in Adult Education I now thoroughly enjoy helping others who wish to pursue a career in hospitality.
